I just read about this today, but haven’t heard anything from Nav Canada as to an implementation date.

The Short of it: All class “G” airspace above 2,500′ in the south and 3,500′ in the north will be designated class “E”. As well, class “G” airspace above 12,500′ to 18,000 will now be class “B”.

The Long of it can be found in the 9/09 AIC

This doesn’t affect VFR pilots that much (unless you went above 12,500 VFR). The majority of the airspace was already class “E” anyways because of all the …

Wired has short but cool article about these “tubular clouds” that form in Queensland every fall. Not sure if they mean Southern Hemisphere fall, or Northern Hemisphere fall.

These long, crazy-looking clouds can grow to be 600 miles long and can move at up to 35 miles per hour, causing problems for aircraft even on windless days.

Have any of you seen anything similar to this in Canada?

The Toronto Star is reporting that Porter would like to build a tunnel connecting the island airport with the mainland.

The tunnel would be 8 metres wide, 4 metres high and outfitted with moving sidewalks for passengers of upstart Porter Airlines, which began flying from the airport in 2006.

So, the tunnel would only accommodate pedestrian traffic, leaving the 2 min ferry ride for vehicles. Could this be a compromise amongst the residents of the city?

A public opinion poll commissioned by the port authority and conducted in early July showed 62 per …

In an attempt to bring more women in to the world of Air Traffic Controllers, Air Traffic Control the Netherlands is hosting a Girls Only event at their Schiphol tower.

Essentially its an open house where girls get to ask questions about the profession, see how and what the ATC controller do, etc..

You can see the horribly translated version of the site via babelfish.

Does anyone know if Nav Canada does anything similar here? I think it’s a great idea!

UPDATE: The Globe and Mail has an article pretty much confirming the selling/moving of the airport.

In the latest development with Buttonville, yorkregion.com is reporting that the Siftons may move Buttonville to a new location.

The owners of Buttonville airport are considering moving the airport from its prominent Hwy. 404 location to keep it running.

Derek Sifton, president of Toronto Airways Ltd., which owns the airport, announced at a news conference today his family is looking at development opportunities for the airport lands.

“We basically have no choice but to protect our investments,” Mr. …

I’m looking for raster elevation data for Canada for a project I’m working on. I’ve been using NASAs SRTM 3 data in the meantime.

The problem? It doesn’t cover latitudes above 60° I took a look at the CDED data from Geobase, however the time it takes me to query that data for elevation data is way too long. I don’t know why, since the resolution is the same as that of the SRTM data. Perhaps its the format it’s stored in?

This problem can be visualized in the below graph. A …
