Strong Boards Build Strong Organizations
Good governance isn’t sexy or flashy and it doesn’t make headlines. When it’s working well, most members never think about it.
But when governance becomes unclear, when roles blur, oversight weakens, or decisions aren’t transparent, trust in the organization erodes quickly.
A board’s responsibility is not to run day-to-day operations, micromanage staff, or be a platform for personal agendas.
A board sets strategic direction. It safeguards financial health, manages risk, and holds leadership accountable. Consistently and professionally.
As pilots, we already understand why this matters.
In a cockpit, roles are clearly defined. Checklists aren’t suggestions. You don’t skip briefings because you “have a feeling”. And you don’t override SOPs because you feel confident. Structure creates safety and it’s discipline that creates reliability.
Organizations are no different.
When governance is strong, members feel it in the stability of the organization. They see it in transparent decision-making. They hear it in consistent communication. They trust that risks are being evaluated carefully and that long-term strategy is guiding short-term decisions.
That trust is COPA’s most valuable asset.
COPA has built that trust over decades. Protecting it must remain a priority.
If elected to the Board of Directors, my focus will be on clarity of roles, measurable strategic goals, responsible oversight, and open communication with members. Governance should provide structure, not unnecessary turbulence.
Strong organizations endure because they are disciplined, not reactive. A clear and communicated path forward creates trust.
If you care about the future of general aviation in Canada, becoming a COPA member is one of the most direct ways to support it. Membership strengthens our collective voice and helps protect the freedoms we value.
Voting in this year’s Board election runs from March 30 and close on April 10, 2026. I encourage all eligible members to take part. Information on how to vote will be sent to your email.
