Approved ELTs
Transport Canada has added a list of approved ELTs to their website. http://www.tc.gc.ca/CivilAviation/certification/elt.htm Keep in mind though, ELTs that are certified to Airworthyness Standard TSO-C91a will not longer be valid as Transport Canada has mandated that ELTs transmit on 406Mhz. I’m unsure when that requirement takes effect. CAR 605.38 has more details.

Go Red Sox!
A few lighthearted clips to get you through ‘humpday’. (All courtesy of liveatc.net). Hats Off to JFK – A pilot reports a hat on the taxiway… it turns out to be a Red Sox baseball cap. I Have Information Blue – A pilot forgot the phonetic alphabet for the letter “Y” – he ended up…

Line Up and Wait
Last week I was in Boston. I flew out of Buffalo because it was a signifigant cost savings over flying out of the most expensive airport in the world. After a nice three days of relaxing, we were waiting for our return flight at the airport. I was keeping a close eye on the US…

Special VFR
Special VFR allows a pilot to land or take-off (in daylight only) during weather that is considered to be IFR. This is especially useful if the weather is crappier than forecast at a destination, you can request SVFR into the zone and land. Several pilots did just that at Buttonville on Monday afternoon. The visibility…

Look Out Below
John Lee, a manager with the Transportation Safety Board, confirmed the ice — made up of toilet water, antifreeze, disinfectant and human waste — came from an airplane bathroom. Yup! Some “toilet debis” from an overflying airplane crashed through a Calgary womans house. More details at CBC

A Few Changes Around Buttonville
FSS would like everyone to use 123.15 for opening, closing, and filing fight plans in the YKZ area. 126.7 is too crowded and congested. As you get further north (Muskoka) they suggest you use 123.475. If all else fails, try 123.275 which is the FSS out of YYZ. I’m trying to find an official document…

The Importance of a Proper Altimeter Setting
Caught this clip on the liveatc.net feed of Buttonville the other day. The pilot was not familiar with the area, and from what I (can only assume) was an improper altimeter setting. Depending on the winds, arrivals into Pearson (YYZ) overfly Buttonville at 3000′. So its important to heed the altitude restrictions noted in YKZs’…

We’re number 8!
Buttonville is now the 8th busiest airport in Canada, up 14.6% from last year with 168,258 aircraft movements in 2007. I have no explanation for the increase other than perhaps just an overall increase in the use of the airport by more students at Toronto Airways, the OPP and York Region Police utilizing the airport….
